The US has meddled where it doesn't belong for decades. All countries do it. Meddling in elections is the name of the game. Today the Kremlin said that the United States was crudely trying to recruit Russian nationals to act as its agents.
The New York Times held a telephone interview with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who said the F.B.I. and U.S. Justice Department had tried unsuccessfully to recruit Russian aluminum tycoon Oleg Deripaska as an informer between 2014 and 2016.
The only thing, so far, no one has produced any evidence of this. Hmm, but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened. We know how corrupt our politicians are. Remember how Obama operatives interfered in Israeli elections, trying to keep Netanyahu from being elected? This comes as no surprise.
In December of 2016, NPR's Ari Shapiro spoke to Carnegie Mellon University researcher Dov Levin about his historical database that tracks U.S. involvement in meddling with foreign elections over the years. His report has documented proof that the U.S. has done it, too, by one expert's count, more than 80 times worldwide between 1946 and 2000.
One example, of divine US intervention was in 2000, in Serbia Yugoslavia. Slobodan Milosevic was running for re-election, and the US didn't want him to stay in power there due to his tendency, you know, to disrupts the Balkans and his human rights violations. intervened in various ways for the opposition candidate, Vojislav Kostunica. And we gave funding to the opposition, and we gave them training and campaigning aide. And according to my estimate, that assistance was crucial in enabling the opposition to win.
Interesting find was that 1/3 of them were done publicly, and the other 2/3 in secret. And this didn't include coups, attempts at regime change.
So isn't it about time for the US to own up to its own meddling?
